TapType: Mechanical Keyboard Sounds

Last updated: November 2, 2026

What is TapType?

TapType: Mechanical Keyboard Sounds is a Chrome extension that plays mechanical keyboard typing sounds while you type on standard websites. Choose recorded or synthesized presets, adjust volume, mute sites, and optionally enable sounds from the address bar keyword "tt".

Single purpose

The Extension's single purpose is to play mechanical keyboard typing sounds on websites.

All permissions and on-device data serve only this typing-sound functionality.

Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how TapType: Mechanical Keyboard Sounds ("the Extension") handles information.

The Extension does not collect personal data for analytics or advertising. Sound settings and related preferences stay in Chrome storage on your device (and may sync through your Google account when Chrome Sync is enabled for extensions).

Data stored on your device

When you use the Extension, the following may be stored in chrome.storage (sync and/or local):

  • Sound preset selection, volume level, and global on/off state
  • Input-fields-only mode preference
  • List of muted site hosts
  • Rate Us prompt state (whether the prompt was shown or dismissed)

This information is used only to remember your sound preferences and mute list. It is not uploaded to developer-operated servers for analytics or advertising.

Information the Extension does not collect

The Extension does not:

  • Collect names, email addresses, or account identifiers
  • Collect location data (region, IP for analytics, GPS, or nearby places)
  • Upload browsing history, page content, or keystroke text to developer servers
  • Send analytics or telemetry to external servers
  • Use third-party advertising or tracking SDKs
  • Require a TapType account

How key events are handled

To play typing sounds, a content script listens for keyboard events on regular websites where the Extension can run. Key events are used only to trigger packaged or synthesized audio samples in the browser. The Extension does not record, store, or transmit the text you type.

Chrome does not allow extensions to inject on chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store, or many system pages (including some new-tab experiences), so no sounds play there. Chrome also does not grant extensions access to standard URL entry in the address bar, so sounds will not play while typing a normal URL there; the optional "tt" omnibox keyword uses a separate offscreen audio path for that limited case.

Permissions explained

  • storage - Save sound settings in Chrome sync storage and Rate Us prompt state locally
  • activeTab - Read the active tab host so you can mute sounds for that site from the popup
  • offscreen - Play packaged keyboard samples for omnibox keyword typing via Web Audio
  • Host access - Listen for key events on web pages to play typing sounds, and expose packaged audio samples so the content script can play them

Host access

Host permissions are required so the Extension can listen for typing on the websites you use and load packaged audio samples into those pages for playback.

The Extension does not use host access to scrape page content, read form values for storage, or send browsing data to the developer.

Data sharing and sale

We confirm the following, as required by the Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies:

  • We do not sell or transfer user data to third parties, except in the limited situations permitted by applicable law.
  • We do not use or transfer user data for purposes unrelated to the operation or improvement of the Extension's core typing-sound functionality.
  • We do not use or transfer user data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.

Remote code

The Extension does not use remote code. All executable code is included in the Extension package and is not loaded from external sources at runtime.

Keyboard sound samples used by the Extension are packaged with the Extension (including CC0 Classic samples where applicable).

Data retention and deletion

  • Settings and muted-site preferences remain on your device (and in Chrome Sync if enabled) until you change them, clear extension data, or uninstall the Extension.
  • Uninstalling the Extension removes locally stored extension data from your browser.

Children's privacy

The Extension is a general-audience tool. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy when the Extension's features or data practices change. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the latest revision. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
