Restore Classic for YouTube™

Last updated: June 15, 2026

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how Restore Classic for YouTube™ ("Restore Classic for YouTube", "the Extension", "we", "us", or "our") handles information when you install and use our browser extension.

Restore Classic for YouTube is a browser extension that restores and customizes the appearance and behavior of YouTube™ (youtube.com) using historical layout presets and user-configurable options. The Extension is distributed through the Chrome Web Store and related browser extension stores.

Official website: https://youtube-customizer.com/

Extension homepage: https://youtube-customizer.com/

By installing or using the Extension, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall the Extension.

YouTube™ is a trademark of Google LLC. This Extension is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Google LLC or YouTube.

2. Summary (Plain Language)

  • We do NOT operate servers that collect your personal data.
  • We do NOT sell, rent, or trade your data.
  • We do NOT use analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs inside the Extension.
  • We do NOT require you to create an account.
  • Your settings are stored locally in your browser (and may sync through your browser's built-in sync feature if you have enabled it).
  • The Extension works only on youtube.com and modifies the page locally in your browser to apply classic layout and customization options.
  • Some optional features communicate directly with YouTube's own services using your existing YouTube session in the browser. That communication is between your browser and YouTube/Google, not with us.
  • On install, update, or uninstall, your browser may open pages on youtube-customizer.com. Visiting those pages is subject to that website's own privacy practices.

3. Information We Do Not Collect

The Extension does NOT collect, transmit to us, or store on our servers:

  • Your name, email address, phone number, or mailing address
  • Your Google/YouTube account credentials
  • Your browsing history outside of youtube.com
  • Your watch history, search queries, subscriptions, or playlists as a separate database controlled by us
  • Payment or financial information
  • Precise geolocation
  • Device identifiers for advertising or profiling
  • Analytics or usage telemetry sent to youtube-customizer.com or any third-party analytics provider operated by us

We have no backend database and no user registration system for the Extension.

4. Information Stored Locally in Your Browser

The Extension uses the browser "storage" permission to save your preferences on your device. Depending on your browser, data may be stored in extension local storage or extension sync storage (for example, Firefox may use sync storage when sync is enabled).

Stored data includes:

  • Stays on your device unless your browser syncs extension data across devices
  • Is not sent to youtube-customizer.com by the Extension
  • Contains only configuration values (booleans, enums, layout IDs), not content you type into YouTube

A) User configuration (storage key: BTConfig)

Your chosen layout preset, UI tweaks, sidebar options, player settings, and other customization preferences defined in the Extension settings panel.

B) Default configuration snapshot (storage key: BTDefaultConfig)

A copy of default settings used to support "Restore Defaults" and to merge new settings when the Extension is updated.

C) Popup appearance preference (storage key: RCFYPopupDarkMode)

Whether the Extension popup uses light or dark theme.

You can delete this data at any time by removing individual settings through the Extension popup, using "Restore Defaults", uninstalling the Extension, or clearing extension/site data in your browser settings.

5. Temporary Data on YouTube Pages

When you visit youtube.com, the Extension injects scripts and styles into the page to apply your selected layout. As part of certain layout features (for example, displaying channel video counts on the watch page), the Extension may temporarily store YouTube page metadata in that tab's sessionStorage under the key "ytd-app-data".

  • Exists only in the active YouTube tab
  • Is cleared when the tab is closed
  • Is not transmitted to youtube-customizer.com
  • May contain publicly visible YouTube page data already present on the page (such as channel identifiers and titles shown on the watch page)

The Extension reads DOM content already loaded by YouTube in your browser to render classic UI elements. We do not receive copies of that data on our servers.

6. Communication with YouTube (Google)

Host permission: *://*.youtube.com/*

The Extension runs only on YouTube websites (excluding embedded YouTube players at youtube.com/embed/*).

For some features, page scripts may send requests directly from your browser to YouTube's official APIs (for example, the YouTube internal "youtubei" browse endpoint) to retrieve public channel information such as video counts. These requests:

  • Are made from your browser to YouTube/Google servers
  • May include your existing YouTube session cookies if you are signed in (credentials: include), the same as normal YouTube browsing
  • Are governed by Google's Privacy Policy and YouTube Terms of Service
  • Are not routed through youtube-customizer.com

We do not receive the responses to those requests on our servers. They are used only in your browser to update the page UI. When you use YouTube while the Extension is active, Google/YouTube continues to process data according to its own policies. Please review: https://policies.google.com/privacy

7. Third-Party Websites and Resources

A) youtube-customizer.com

The Extension may open the following pages in a new browser tab:

These pages are operated separately from the Extension code. Any information collected when you visit youtube-customizer.com is governed by that website's privacy policy, not by the Extension itself.

B) Assets loaded for classic YouTube appearance

To reproduce historical YouTube designs, the Extension may cause your browser to load visual assets from third-party hosts referenced in extension stylesheets, including s.ytimg.com and related YouTube/Google image hosts, and i.imgur.com (legacy layout graphics). Loading these resources is similar to loading images on a webpage.

C) Optional compatibility with other extensions

The Extension includes an optional setting to improve compatibility with the "Return YouTube Dislike" extension. If you enable this setting and have Return YouTube Dislike installed, the two extensions may interact locally in your browser.

8. Permissions Explained

storage

Required to save and read your customization settings locally.

Host access: *://*.youtube.com/*

Required to inject CSS and scripts that restore classic YouTube layouts and apply your preferences on YouTube pages.

The Extension does NOT request broad permissions such as access to all websites, bookmarks, clipboard, microphone, camera, or the "tabs" permission.

9. Data Sharing and Sale

We do not sell, rent, lease, or share your personal information with third parties for their marketing purposes.

We do not share Extension settings with advertisers or data brokers.

The only "sharing" that occurs is inherent to normal web browsing: your browser communicates with YouTube when you use youtube.com; your browser may load third-party image assets; your browser may sync extension storage data across your devices if you use browser sync features (controlled by Google/Mozilla/etc., not by us).

10. Data Retention

  • Extension settings persist until you change them, reset defaults, clear extension data, or uninstall the Extension.
  • sessionStorage data in YouTube tabs is temporary and removed when the tab closes.
  • We retain no copies of your settings on our servers because we do not operate a settings backend for the Extension.

11. Security

Because your settings remain in your browser and are not uploaded to our servers, the primary security of your Extension data depends on the security of your device and browser profile.

  • Request the minimum permissions needed for its function
  • Avoid collecting personal information unnecessarily
  • Not embed third-party analytics or advertising scripts

No method of electronic storage is 100% secure. You are responsible for keeping your browser and operating system updated and protecting access to your device.

12. Children's Privacy

The Extension is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us through youtube-customizer.com, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

13. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding personal data. Because the Extension stores settings locally and does not maintain user accounts, most controls are available directly to you:

  • Access / review: Open the Extension popup to view your current settings.
  • Correction: Change any setting in the Extension popup.
  • Deletion: Uninstall the Extension or clear extension storage in browser settings.
  • Opt-out of website pages: You may close tabs opened on install/update; you are not required to visit youtube-customizer.com to use the Extension on YouTube.
  • Opt-out of optional API features: Some UI enhancements depend on YouTube API requests; disabling related layout features or uninstalling the Extension stops those requests.

If you are in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or other regions with data protection laws, and you contact us regarding data processed through youtube-customizer.com (the website), we will respond as required by applicable law.

14. International Users

The Extension is available internationally. Settings are processed locally on your device. If you use browser sync, your browser provider may transfer synced extension data across borders according to its own policies.

15. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the Extension, browser platform requirements, or legal obligations. When we update the policy, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this document.

Material changes may also be noted on https://youtube-customizer.com/

Continued use of the Extension after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

16. Open Source

Restore Classic for YouTube is released under the MIT License. You may review the Extension's source code to verify how it handles data. The Extension's behavior described in this policy reflects version 2.0.0 and later unless this document is updated.

17. Contact Us
